Note: Tomorrow you may come to school dressed up for Halloween.

Note number two: Don't forget daylight savings is this weekend - we fall back.  Enjoy your extra hour!

Note number three: It is hard to believe that today is the last day of the quarter!  On November 12th we will have a regular school day, with an honor roll assembly at 1:30.  Report card pick-up will take place from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. This is a bit different from previous years as we do not have a planned time for sit-down conferences, simply a pick-up.  As always, if you have any questions/comments/concerns please don't hesitate to get in contact with me, as many of you already have.

Note four: Math exams from the 24th are being sent home today, along with the follow-up quiz we had today on addition/subtraction of decimals (we saw a lot of improvement across the board!).  In addition, two Diary quizzes are being sent home.  It is quite clear that some students are not doing their readings each night which has had a negative affect on not only their grades, but their understanding of the strategies on each night's homework and overall reading comprehension.  I hope that with the start of a new quarter tomorrow, those students will start off on a good note.  All grades for the quarter are currently in ThinkWave (spelling still looks goofy-I might have to average that one out by hand).

Your homework for tonight is:
1) Mathematics: No homework
2) Spelling: Sort your words three times, record your PR in you notebook
3) Vocabulary: In your word study notebook, use each of our vocabulary words in a sentence.
4) Read pages 130 - 155 in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever and do two of the following on a loose leaf piece of paper: Make sure you're ready for tomorrow's quiz on this section of reading.

Make a connection: Quote a passage, with page number, that reminds you of something that has happened to you.  Write at least two sentences briefly describing the connection you made.
Expand your vocabulary: Write down at least two words you did not know, their page number, and the sentence they were used in. Write one sentence describing what you think the words means.

Words
By Eloise Greenfield

Oh, I love those wacky words
Those crazy words that crack me up,
Like dibbily-doobily-doo and such,
They don’t mean much,
But oh, I love them so.

Oh, I love those wicked words,
Those mean, mean words
From the mouths of sorcerers,
Who point and yell
And cast a spell, saying
“You will sleep for a thousand years.

I will not change,
So stop your tears. Sleep!
And the good folks fall and then lie still,
While I hug myself
To hold the chill
Brought on by those
Wicked words

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Reminder: Students should have between 3-5 pencils in their desks at all times.  The reason for this is not only so students are always prepared to complete their work, but also so the class is not disrupted by pencil sharpening at inopportune times.  Please keep a healthy supply of pencils, we write a lot!

Tomorrow we will have a ten question math quiz on multiplication with decimals to the thousandth.

Your homework for tonight is:
1) Mathematics: Handout on problem solving with decimals (if you did not finish the classwork side in class, finish that as well)
2) Spelling: Sort and paste/glue your words into your word study notebook.
3) Vocabulary: In your word study notebook, draw an image to illustrate the meaning of each of our vocabulary words.

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Friday we will have a quiz on multiplying decimals to the thousandth.

I've noticed that quite a few people have been making small mistakes when multiplying decimals mainly because their numbers are not lining up when they get to the addition step.  On tonight's homework I've made the text bigger, the numbers more spaced out, and drew lines on to the paper so we can make sure we're putting the numbers in the correct spot.  Please take your time with these problems so we don't have any small errors.

Your homework for tonight is:
1) Math: Handout on multiplication with decimals.
2) Spelling: Sort your words three times and record your PR in your word study notebook.
3) Vocabulary: In your word study notebook, use each of our vocabulary words in a sentence.

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Note: Spelling grades might look a little goofy on ThinkWave right now, I'm switching from the points system to percentages because each group has different amounts of points each test. With that in mind, the scores for each individual test are correct, but the average is the part that is not working out right now.

Note #2: Permission slips the October 21st field trip to Bengston's Pumpken Fest are being sent out again.  Please return permission slips with money by October 17th (Thursday)

Note #3: Quite a few papers are being sent home today, be sure to check your boomerang folders!

Your homework for tonight is:
1) Math: Hand out on multiplication with decimals.  If you need to do your work on a scrape piece of paper, that is fine, just attach it to your homework when you turn it in tomorrow morning. (If you did not finish the classwork side, do that for homework as well.)
2) Spelling: In your word study notebook, write either 8 sentences using 8 words or 4 sentences using 8 words.
3) Vocabulary: In your word study notebook, think of an association for each of our vocabulary words and explain why they are associated with that word.

When writing your association, use the sentence frame:

I associate _____________ with the word _______________ because _________________.

For example: I associate hamburgers with the word delicious because I love hamburgers and think they are delicious!
