A big thank you to Pagie's mom, Mrs. Johnson, for bringing in the cool water this morning. It certainly made the beginning of the day much more refreshing.  Thank you!

Your homework for tonight is:

1) Reflect on your tweets about the anniversary of the March on Washington today.  Think about whether or not Dr. King's dream has come true today.  In your Social Studies notebook respond to the following quotes with your own ideas.  Use the questions under the quotes as a guide if you are not sure how to respond. Write the direct quote in your notebook and respond under it with a paragraph.
Note: Parents, I really want to see what each student thinks about these quotes, so have a conversation about them, but please let them write down their own thoughts--whatever they may be.  This is a starting point of a discussion and I want to see everyone's point of view. You can find Dr. King's speech here.

"What will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation"
- Do you think the March on Washington was the "greatest demonstration for freedom in history?"

"This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
- If the US constitution said every man should be given the rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" why do you think people were not treated fairly or given those rights?

"Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred"
- What do you think Dr. King means by this?

"Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force"
What do you think this means?

Come ready to discuss your responses tomorrow.
